Reason: We would like to have a deep analysis on what conflict we would face in the collaboration and how we turn failure to success.
- Designing effective operating work-flow and system:
Reason: It is important to make the teams to be collaborated in the organizational level.
OUR LOGO:
In our logo, it includes different colour puzzle pieces which mean different kind of people are in our life and working place. No. of Hands and no. of figures of logo represents that influenced by unique background and experience, different individuals would have their own personality and tasks handling styles. To complete a task (the puzzle), we have to collaborate with different people and use knowledge and skill learned from this master program to resolve problems caused by different cultures and standing points.
OUR GOAL:
"Innovative Resolution"
We may sometimes start the negotiation with our own preference in order to get the best output. The fact that we are looking at the negotiation in our own preference would create conflicts that avoid us to achieve win-win situation and end up with a compromising or distributive result. However, putting off our own or otherside's needs can't help building good relationship and creating synergy. We have always to think outside the box to make both side "win" as well as achieving long term collaborative relationship. This attitude is very important for us to get rid of the current boundary to come up with a win-win/ integrative collaboration.
We believe that our goal can always remind us the current situation is NOT the only way to go. We should always look at the same problem repeatedly with different perspective and come up with an innovative solution to resolve the conflicts and the real problem.
OUR MYTH to be proved:
"Collaboration is not the reverse of competition"
This myth means that competition and collaboration has some positive relationships. People may think that if other party becomes your competitor, he/she will not be your partner. In our business competitive environment, organizations which provide the same services/products to the marketplace would classify as rivals. They spend time on thinking ways to win over or imitate competitors. Cooperation would not appear on their minds as they believe that competition is stand front with collaboration.
We choose this because in our notion that competitors collaborate with each other seems becoming a mainstream concept. Fashioned leaders would think that cooperation with competitors could create opportunities and values. They would rather have a clear vision to set the stage for friendly collaboration than thinking how to compete impetuously. This vision encourages leaders to focus on creating a one-of-a-kind customer experience and achieving objectives.
In December 2011, both companies agree to make a mid-to-long term research collaboration in environment-friendly technologies. BMW will supply the efficient diesel engines to Toyota ; this makes an important step for both companies to expand and complement the growing range of hybrids. Both companies view this partnership as a significant step forward.
Extension 1 May 2012
Thank you for our classmates’ nice comments. It is a good learning opportunity for us to broaden the relationship between collaboration and competition.
As from all the comments wrote, most of the views are the same as our group said. In current competitive business environment, companies could not survive under the one way of winning over rivals. The whole society is progressing, as well as the whole atmosphere. Once of survival mode is to make a suitable collaboration of competitors. This not only extends the survival opportunity of the organization, but also creates a learning platform to both parties. Although collaboration with competitor is a trend and benefit for company, some items should be aware during work with the partners. Since there are differences between each company such as culture and language etc, companies should establish an effective accountability system. It could minimize conflict to be made in the collaboration process. In the accountability system, companies should know how to be solved if there are different comments from each company; which working procedure is responsible by which company etc. All companies should understand their roles in the collaboration.
Companies are faced with the challenge to optimize cost to remain profitable and same time invests heavily in research and development. Auto majors have been sourcing globally or setting up plants in lower cost countries to reduce cost structures, but this alone would not be sufficient, they would have to look at scale more seriously to bring down the cost structures. Collaboration is the way to go and collaborating with competitors could be a WIN-WIN for all. Zara, for instance, has her own factories to produce garments and retails stores to sell her produces. In some district, she would collaborate with some factories to manufacture clothing.
Zara and their partner works very smooth as their all know their roles and liability clear such as their partner could not open any retails store in such districts. Furthermore, to avoid any loss or conflict, company should keep their confidential items such as their technical skill or designs etc. in safe. Otherwise, the partner company may steal your ideas or technology skill. Of course, companies should build up trust in their partnership. Partners trust each other and are willing to put each other’s interests ahead of their own. (Darrell K.R., Kara G., James A., 2009). If there is trust in the collaboration, both of companies could get the minimum advantage.
Our group agrees that collaboration of competitor could benefit and cause loss of the customers. When two competitors collaborate, some new product may be created as they combine their advantages or special skill to produce a new product. For example, Sony and Ericsson develop a new mobile phone brand Sony Ericsson. Advantage of Sony is product design and color screening and Ericsson is mobile function. After they collaborate, they create a serious of mobile phone which can increase competitiveness of both companies. On the other hand, we admit that the bad situations are most likely happen in oligopoly market. Customers have no further actions to fight against if the unfavorable situations happen, as some classmates quoted in the comments. We do believe that the organizations need to consider the business sides and the social angles in the same time. That is why the corporate social responsibility is so important in current environment. Our city, Hong Kong, is a benefit society at large and full of unsatisfactory mainly due to the large enterprises lack of corporate social responsibility. For example, it is hard to maintain a balance between the economy and the ecosystem, a trade-off always exists between economic developments.
Also, in our daily life, competition is not such a bad thing even for teamwork, we just need to know how it works so we would know how to deal with it and get the best out of competitive employees. Competition is in human nature, it is the wish to succeed and perform outstanding actions that will set us apart from others such as faster, better, more productive and efficient. Therefore, do things in such way that everyone else will appreciate it, so that, the key is not to try and change the need for competition, but to redirect is energy and properly manage it as an interesting asset for teamwork and collaboration. The competitive employees can help the company empower your team to collaboration. Therefore, we do agree Cyndi wrote “有競爭才會有進步” no matter in personal development and organization development.
We do conclude that collaboration with competitors is good for the future of the organizations and society unless they have thoroughly taken the users/stakeholders into deep consideration.

I like the logo and flash very much!
回覆刪除Regarding the myth of the collaboration and competition on the business level, I think there is no forever cooperator or competitor, which depends on the business situations and environments. Cooperation amongst companies’ bases on the Win-Win situation, otherwise the cooperation would turn to competition, vice versa. For example, Cisco and HP used to be intimate partners, who built up teams to fight for opportunities, in that Cisco provided networking products/solutions and HP provided IT products. The combination of solutions was competitive in the markets. However, as HP acquired H3C, which means that HP had a strong ability to provide networking products as well that could replace and even compete with Cisco completely, the situation was changed. The relation between IBM and Cisco was similar that as Cisco had ability to provide IT products by acquisitions and R&D investment, IBM had to choose Huawei as global networking alliance partner to compete with Cisco and HP since 2010.

回覆刪除I agree with Amor's comment. Actually, collaboration with competitors is based on business situations. One of the situations has been mentioned by "Synery" is that the current competitor can create opportunities and values to its company. For example, collaboration between BMW and Toyota can reduce BMW's engine production costs even though they compete in the industry.
回覆刪除Collaboration with competitors can also happen is as follows:
(1) Both companies should set game rules before collaboration. For example, they should make agreement to use and own intellectual property of both companies before collaboration. It can reduce any conflict and create value for each other.
(2) Collaboration with competitors can work fine if redundancy in process can be terminated. For example, two magazine companies are using the same printing presses. After collaboration, both companies can use one press instead for production. Then, cost can be saved.
Once competitor collaborate with each other really becoming a mainstream concept, it will be easy to have a win-win-win situation.
回覆刪除The first WIN, individually, company can obtain a growth opportunity, its in term of technology improvement, knowledge transfer and improvement of cost controlling system etc..
The second WIN, two companies as a whole, relationship building with competitor which is now partner, can gain a better goodwill and competitiveness from an eye of consumer and among other rivals. As others may see them as a single party and to be much powerful to develop further together.
The third WIN, consumer can ultimately take advantages from industrial-wide collaboration. As Synergy said, after BMW and Toyota collaboration, consumer can have more choices and better performance over hybrids vehicles.
Encouragingly, due to more options to choose and lower cost, more customers may willing to try and buy this kind of product. Finally, the pie(market) could be enlarged.
It is a very interesting myth I must admit. And I like the flash !
回覆刪除I would agree with Wennie that there has to be clear guidelines towards what the collaboration entitles. And the companies should also agree upon guidelines if they choose they will not be a part of the collaboration anymore. For instance the reduction of cost by the two companies in case of sharing production machines and thereby reducing machine stock. If one company decides not to be a part of the collaboration, what will happen to the production facilities. Who is entitled to invest in new machines and who does not have to pay extra to keep the current.
But I definitely agree with the fact that collaborations is a way of the future, to share technologies and information for not only the good of their own company, but for the good of the planet.
The gold fish design is incredible and draws me immediately to read further in this blog! As for the myth, interestingly it is difficult to separate competition and collaboration in recent years and it becomes such a complicated business phenomenon. It would be more appealing to add more details on their constructive aspects in the article. Competition is such a very powerful force for enhancing performance. With competitors people are motivated to do their best work. Without it, a team may loses its unity or become lack of focus. Collaboration is yet another strong force to increase the quality of work. Keeping the balance being enemies and being friends is not easy. How to make the best effort to balance these two powerful forces in such a way that they complement each other instead of overriding the other? The challenge becomes how much a company should collaborate and to find equilibrium that a company won’t overdo it especially when collaborating with their competitors. Conflicts of interest and lack of trust are usually issues that come with it. Efforts may require leaders to take responsibilities to direct their teams, to maintain a right balance for their staffs to be disciplined collaborators and to create a shared goals or visions among their competitors. Shared goals may not be crucial however it substantiates the collaborating efforts from both teams.

回覆刪除I like and support this myth very much and total agree with the above comments.
回覆刪除Collaboration with competitor will bring creativities and new opportunities to achieve win-win relationship. I would like to point out that this is not only applying to business sectors as mentioned, but also non-business collaboration. Let me share with the below case:
Hong Kong Tourism Board and Macau Government Tourist Office are competitors. Their objectives are similar and focus on the same target recently - China visitors. In order to increase the number of visitor arrival, they worked and promoted the scheme “A Day in Two Cities” together as partnership to encourage visitors to experience the contrast in just a single day. As a result, Hong Kong and Macau are benefited from this collaboration and successfully expanded the visitor pool.
I agree that collaboration usually brings positive effects among the two involved parties and sometimes, other factors are required to consider before we can call the collaboration "successful".
回覆刪除However, I wish to highlight another point of view. Collaboration is sometime good among the parties but it may not necessary good to the other stakeholders.
Recently, the merging of New York Stock Exchange and German exchange Deutsche Boerse was called off due to the concern of monopoly raised by European Union. Collaboration between New York Stock Exchange and German exchange Deutsche Boerse is definitely good between the two exchanges. They believed that they could create synergies after they merged. And that's why they could find the way to merge. However, the merging may create monopoly resulting in jeopardizing the rights of the stakeholders, like investors and companies and this is the underlying reason European Union turned down their application.
There are many types or different formats of Antitrust Law trying to stop such "collaboration", like previous example in European Union, in United States and Australasia. In Hong Kong, the Antitrust Law is still undergoing the discussion phase and it is believed that the enrollment of the Antitrust would bring benefits to the society.
I agree with the myth of Synergy, they do have position relationships between collaboration and competition, that is similar to coopetition!
回覆刪除Nowadays, competition are encouraged in order to win a better results for all competitors. In Chinese, 有競爭才會有進步, which has the same meaning. For collaboration, it would help to improve each individual if there is a positive attitude towards competition, however, if anyone of the individual possess negative attitude, competition would cause harmful effect, while one may hurt the others in order to win the game.
Such as marathon, most of the athletes just want to compete himself/herself, and they would encourage each other to get a better time in finishing the game! Further, keep trying to reach a higher level, which is a very positive one with win win win situation!
For the market has only a few service provider, such as the local telecom industry, which is oligopoly market. Since they are competiting with each other in trying to obtain larger and larger market share, they can still align to cto corner the market in raising up their service charge together, such as the impose of tunnel service charge to all the mobile users. It is totally echo the myth that "collaboration is not the reverse of competition"! But I don't like such kind of collaboration while it hurt my purse! @_@"

回覆刪除Hi, your group name has inspired me to look into some information regarding synergy. I am curious of the psychological side of it. My years of working experience have given me mixed experiences on group work synergy and that I believe on top of the knowledge, skills, and resources that individual members bring to the group, something hidden are parallel or even more important to influence the performance outcome.
回覆刪除“Allport (1924a) famously wrote that ‘There is no psychology of groups which is not essentially and entirely a psychology of individuals.’” Personally, I quite like to buy the idea that the feeling and emotional parts of the group members should be well taken care of, as they maybe the powerhouse of even more productive group interactions (behaviors) and engagement. I see that in group interactions, as generalization, boomers are more conventional, while the millennials are more fun seeking and excitement oriented. A mixed group with boomers and millennials may require higher level of receptiveness from both sides. Having said that, individual own his or her responsibility on his or her ultimate decisions on feeling and emotion!
Interestingly, this group has given me a sense of calm and serenity and I think the swimming fishes are really icons that add up to the group identity.

First of all, I do agree with synergy's view on collaboration is not the reverse of competition.
回覆刪除The example of synergy group about the BMW and Toyota shown how two multinational manufacture exchange its technology which they own specalized in. The example of the car industury is a perfect place to demostrate the synergy's ideas, when the firm controled the core technical skills which the rival does not have, and these technology became the bargaining power in terms of collaboration. In SME level, the firm might not have such advantage.
Indeed, as the group synergy mentioned, collaboration in terms of technology exchange became one of the strategic partnership. Since SME level firm usually compete against each other heavily, It will be great if the SME level firm can take advantage of this collaboration with its rival, generate more benefits.

Competition and collaboration are 2 strategies for conflict management. Based on Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, they are reversed in term of cooperation, but in the same direction in the assertiveness.
回覆刪除An uneasy 3C triangle stated by Polenske, 2004 (1) even introduces Cooperation as the 3rd factor to comprise 3 different end points to analysis. By its analysis using economic concepts, collaboration can link up the individual/groups/companies as large organizations to enjoy the economies of scale, and lower adaptive and transaction cost by establishing long-term relationship. Therefore, they can have lower average cost in long run while it involves higher initial costs than competition. Therefore, competition and collaboration are reversed on different focus on short-run and long-run objectives.
On the other hands, both competition and collaboration are psychosocial relationships between organizations. Relationships will always change by its dynamic nature while the root cause of switching is the degree of rapport and communication. The bargaining power of 2 (or more) organizations will not be same in different context due to their perceived competitive advantages. Therefore, when the higher power one use its power in aggressive approach (2), or vice versa due to bad communication, the rapport will be hurt and the strategies will switch dynamically in between the process.
To conclude, they are 2 reversed strategic directions in terms of outcome, while they are only the 2 of 5 strategies (in terms of Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument) to be switched dynamically during conflict process.
There are several business cases showing even competitors able to collaborate time to time (Some has already mentioned by Synergy),

Let me say first that your logo conveys the concept of synergy and the mix of ideas and diversity among the team members.
回覆刪除About the myth, this kind of phenomenon can be explain with 'coopetition' concept and I totally agree with the point of your group.
Today the business environment is affected by hard and aggressive competition among companies but there are so many environments which competition and collaboration can go hand in hand.
A very good example is the "coopetition" among 'made in Italy' manufacturing companies inside the "industry districts". In this period Italy is affected by a strong crisis and this districts intend to collaborate with "consortium collaborations" basically for reap economies of scale and rationalize logistics and governance costs. All of this results could guarantee economic advantages without compromise the competitive advantages of each company. I think that is a very good solution for small-medium companies existence in time of crisis!
This myth reminds me of a book I read earlier – Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne where the author argue that in today’s highly competitive business environment, successful companies are “not to out-perform the competition in the existing industry, but to create new market space or a blue ocean, thereby making the competition irrelevant”. (1)
回覆刪除I agree with Synergy that the myth is indeed a myth. If competition is irrelevant in creating new market space, collaboration with competitors can of course exist. Synergy’s example on BMW & Toyota echoes nicely with this point, as such both companies are collaborating to enlarge hybrid cars market – a new market space. It’s almost like they’re collaborating to educate consumers on this new product so as to enlarge the pie.
That prompts me to question if collaboration with competitors mostly occurs in creating a brand new market. And that how sustainable such collaboration is it? While this sounds like a win-win game for the collaborators, what about the consumers? It does not sound like a good deal for consumers as Cyndi pointed out in her example of telecom companies charging a tunnel service charge. How about a win-win game between a company & its consumers? Does it exist in this world at all?
